Ugandan vanilla has stood the test of time and is still growing in popularity. It is now considered the second most yearned for after Madagascar’s. It is considered the best alternative, once there is a shortage for the most wanted type. Ugandan vanilla is now global and sought after, thanks to its mainly two harvest seasons making it available all year round and its being rich in vanillin.
It is favored by rich volcanic soils and warm consistent temperatures. The vanilla is mainly grown in western, southwestern and central regions. The vanilla growing areas include Bundibugyo, Ntoroko and Kasese, near the Rwenzori mountains benefiting from volcanic soils.
Other areas are Bunyagabu,Rubirizi and Ibanda. In the central region, we have areas such as Kayunga, Mukono, Jinja, Kamuli and Buikwe. Mpigi and Luwero round off the regions. It is mainly grown by smallholder farmers and because of good practices of Fair trade, the farmers can support their families. Export volumes have exceeded 600 metric tons and are still climbing. Uganda accounts for 9% of the world’s total supply.

Emerging markets:
Buyers are expanding globally, with recent increases in exports to India, Australia and Japan.
Blanching — Fresh pods are briefly submerged in hot water (63–65°C) to halt vegetative growth and initiate enzymatic activity.
Sweating — Pods are wrapped in woollen blankets and stored in wooden boxes for 24–48 hours, maintaining warmth and triggering the conversion of glucovanillin to vanillin.
Slow drying — Beans are laid in the sun for 3–5 hours daily over several weeks, then moved to shade racks overnight.
Conditioning — Fully dried beans rest for a minimum of 8 weeks in sealed wooden boxes, deepening complexity, moisture equilibrium, and aroma.
Why Ugandan Vanilla is Dominating
Superior Flavor Profile
Ugandan Planifolia beans offer a bold, creamy taste with hints of chocolate, ice cream, and earthy tones, making them ideal for high-heat cooking, baking, and rich vanilla extracts.
Why Ugandan Vanilla is Dominating
High Chemical Maturity:
Laboratory reports indicate that Ugandan vanilla is among the highest in quality, boasting a high vanillin content of roughly 4%.
Sustainability & Quality Control:
The industry uses sustainable practices, such as inter-cropping with cocoa and banana, and ensures farmers pick beans only when fully mature, resulting in a higher quality, premium product.
Stable Alternative Supply:
As the second-largest exporter behind Madagascar, Uganda has stabilized the global supply chain, allowing consistent access for gourmet chefs. Uganda’s two annual harvest seasons and ideal tropical climate allow a more consistent and reliable vanilla supply, giving it a competitive advantage over markets that depend on a single annual crop.
Two Harvesting Seasons:
Uganda's equatorial climate allows for two distinct harvest seasons (June-July and December-January), providing a reliable, year-round supply of fresh beans.
Ethically sourced
Ugandan vanilla is ethically sourced and traceable, it is 100% natural, non-GMO, vegan friendly, sustainably sourced and has no additives. The vanillin content is (2.0-3.0%) with a rich and bold flavor. The bean size and appearance is of long, plump, oily and fragrant beans.
This vanilla is ideal for baking, extracts and gourmet cooking. Whole Vanilla beans measure 5-7 inches, the perfect length for rich flavor. Their plump, moist texture ensures a smooth, full-bodied taste. Due to its being rich in vanillin and two harvest seasons making it available all year round, Ugandan vanilla has securely made it from small holder farmers to the international market.
