1998 Founded

Born From a Simple Belief

Mayana Farms, founded in 1998, later evolved into Essence of Africa—built on a single, powerful belief: that Africa’s natural abundance—its fertile soils, favorable climate, and dedicated farmers—produces ingredients of exceptional quality that remain largely undiscovered by the world.

We entered the agro and food processing sector with one goal — to promote Africa's farming community to the world and to provide global consumers with the finest natural products the continent has to offer. From a modest beginning sourcing vanilla from a handful of Ugandan farms, we have grown into a multi-product, multi-market operation serving buyers across 40+ countries.

"We bring you the soul of the African continent through its superior produce — grown and processed in the heart of Africa, by Africans."

Today, Essence of Africa maintains the highest standards in farm practice and processing, applying the best techniques to produce the right quality while preserving the full flavour, aroma, and nutritional value of every product. We have developed a sustainable model of production and supply that starts at the farm and ends at the consumer's table — with satisfaction at every step.

Empowering Smallholder Farmers

At the heart of everything we do are the farmers. We work with over 10,000 smallholder growers across Uganda, providing them with non-GMO planting material, hands-on agronomic training, guaranteed market access, and fair, contracted pricing. Our model gives farmers stability — they know what they're growing, they know the quality required, and they know they have a buyer. That certainty transforms livelihoods.

Creating Economic Opportunity

Every kilogram of vanilla, every bag of chilli, every pouch of moringa powder that leaves our facility represents income — for the farmer who grew it, the workers who processed it, and the families who depend on both. We pay above-market prices to our farmer partners through our contract farming arrangements, and our Kampala processing facility provides stable employment for local workers. Across 20+ communities, our presence has created measurable economic uplift.

Protecting the Environment

Sustainability is not a marketing term for us — it is a condition of how we operate. All planting material in our network is strictly non-GMO. We train farmers in soil health management, natural composting, water conservation, and crop rotation to protect Uganda's extraordinary agricultural land for future generations. Our processing uses traditional low-temperature drying methods that consume far less energy than industrial alternatives, and we minimise packaging waste through our bulk supply model for commercial buyers.

Advancing Women in Agriculture

Women make up the backbone of smallholder agriculture in Uganda — they do the majority of the work yet historically have had the least access to training, markets, and financial reward. Our farmer training programme actively prioritises women participants, and our procurement policies ensure that payment goes directly to the farmer — including women farmers who might otherwise be excluded from the value chain. We are committed to a supply chain where gender equity is built in, not bolted on.

Voices From theSoil

Behind every product is a person, a family, and a livelihood transformed. These are the voices of our farmer partners — sharing how access to fair markets, training, and long-term partnerships has changed not just their farms, but their futures.

"

Before Essence of Africa, I was selling my vanilla at whatever price the market gave. Now I know my price before I plant. That certainty changed everything for my family.
